Every now and then I get to work on a project that I feel honored to be hired to do. Such a one is Joe Gallo's new book on public sculpture in Boston, Boston Bronze and Stone Speak to Us. If ever there was a labor of love, this is one and it is a beauty.
I met Joe a couple of years ago when he hired me to work on his professional web site PDIplants.com. He has a business doing interior and exterior plantscapes for office buildings throughout the Boston area. Joe is one of those passionate, full-of-life people whose enthusiasm is contagious. He loves Boston and he loves art and, over the time of working together he talked to me about a dream he had of writing a book about the abundance of stunning public sculpture in Boston.
This summer we began work on it. Joe took literally hundreds of photographs and read endless articles on the works he was photographing. He did research and wrote articles and sent everything to me. it was my job to design the book and it was a job I loved doing.
As work progressed on the book Joe suggested we make some maps to show people where these works of art could be found. He looked up artists in the Boston area and had meetings with some. He contacted art curators in places like the State House and Boston Public Library. Every week the book took on more and more dimension.
Finally, the book had grown to 280+ pages with hundreds of photographs, 18 maps and lists of the works by categories and sculptors with a bibliography and other reference material. It is now ready for the public and I could not be more excited. I know Joe will do well with it. he has that kind of fire.
Boston Bronze and Stone Speak to Us will be available in bookstores throughout the Boston area or online at the web site. It will also be on Amazon. Please check it out. It is a labor of love and a work of art and I feel honored to have been involved in its creation.
Thanks for reading.
