For Indie Authors/From Indie Authors: Dee Ernst

I always wanted to be a writer, and burned up the typewriters all through high school and college, then took a short break to get married, have a daughter, get divorced, get married again, have another daughter and have a dozen or so jobs, buy a house or two  By the time I got around to writing again, I was in my forties.  Now I'm not.  Better Of Without Him is my first published novel.  I'm currently re-writing my very first effort, because I have learned so much in the past ten years, I know I could really do it justice.
Advice:

  • Edit, edit, then edit again.  And when you know it's perfect, have someone else edit it for you.  After reading the same thing so many times, it becomes impossible to find all those spelling and punctuation mistakes.
  • Make sure you love what you're doing.  Writing is hard work, long and lonely work, with little or no immediate gratification.  It's easier to go forward if you're writing something that you really believe in.
  • If you want to join a writing group, make sure the group encourages honest criticism.  Some groups are love-fests, and although it's great to hear how wonderful your book is, it won't do you much good if it's empty praise.
