- Avoid pleonasms! New writers often use too many words. They write about shining suns, or trees that gently sway in soft breezes, or characters who glower angrily while tightly clenching their fists. Cut out the dead weight. Remove unnecessary modifiers. Use as few words as possible.
- Avoid head-hopping. Too often, new writers write from the point-of-view of one character, but suddenly reveal the thoughts of another. Study third-person strict POV. I find that works best, and it's the method I use.
- Obviously, read a lot across different genres. A good guideline is to read as much as you write. If you write an hour a day, read an hour a day.
